A master printer, Mathers was a great nephew of Henry Morgan. His grandfather Enos Morgan, and uncle, Henry Morgan both owned local newspapers, with the latter having started the Morgantown Post. His father, E. L. Mathers, was also a printer.

Mathers was active with the Monongalia County GOP starting in 1912, and also served for two years as treasurer from 1914-1916.
